A Home that Blends with Nature Using Weathering Steel

When it comes to building a home that complements its natural surroundings, selecting the right materials is essential. For the founding principle of Purple Cherry Architects, Cathy Purple Cherry, weathering steel was the perfect choice to create a residence that blends seamlessly into the landscape while standing out in its uniqueness.

Weathering Steel in the Design

The use of weathering steel was not limited to just one aspect of the home. It was used extensively for the roof, gutters, and downspouts of the main house, as well as to fully clad the detached pole building on the property. The result is a cohesive, rustic aesthetic that exudes an “old agrarian” charm, reminiscent of historic farm buildings nestled in rural landscapes.

Inspired by Nature

The architect/homeowner’s decision to incorporate weathering steel was inspired by the desire to make the home blend into its natural environment. Located on a mountain ridge, the house is surrounded by trees, and the goal was to ensure the building appeared as though it had been there for decades. “I didn’t want the home to stand out through the tree line,” Cherry explained. “I wanted the materials to intentionally look old, so it would appear as though it was an agricultural building from a distance.”

Aesthetic Benefits of Weathering Steel

While there were no specific structural benefits to using weathering steel, the design advantages were undeniable. The natural weathering process of the steel allows the home to develop a rusted patina over time, contributing to the rustic, timeworn aesthetic. The homeowner particularly appreciated how the rusted steel roof blends with the hemlock wood siding, creating a harmonious visual blend between the home and its environment.

“I love how the entire roof has rusted, and I love the way it blends with the hemlock wood siding,” Cherry noted. This visual transformation, which continues as the steel weathers further, over time is one of the most distinctive and appealing aspects of the material.

After three years, the weathering steel has proven to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The roof and other components have weathered beautifully, enhancing the home’s rustic charm. The functionality of the material, particularly in terms of durability and maintenance, has exceeded expectations.

Sustainability Matters

While the visual appeal of weathering steel was the primary focus, the environmental sustainability of the material was an added benefit. “The sustainability benefits are the icing on the cake!” the homeowner remarked. Weathering steel’s longevity and reduced need for maintenance make it an eco-friendly choice for home construction.

A Perfect Fit for the Environment

In the end, the decision to use weathering steel has paid off in both design and functionality. The material’s ability to blend into the natural surroundings, its striking visual appeal, and its sustainability make it an ideal choice for this mountain home. Looking back, the homeowner wouldn’t change a thing about the design or implementation of weathering steel in the project, a testament to how perfectly the material fits their vision and lifestyle.

For those considering using weathering steel in their own projects, Cherry offers some valuable advice: “Don’t be afraid of the rusted outcome because it is so unique.” The natural aging process of weathering steel offers a dynamic, evolving aesthetic that cannot be replicated with other materials.

This project is a prime example of how weathering steel can be used to create homes that not only stand the test of time but also enhance the beauty of their surroundings. If you’re considering weathering steel for your own home, take inspiration from this stunning mountain retreat. The unique, rusted patina might be just what your project needs to truly stand out—or blend in!
