ASTM A588 Weathering Steel
Central Steel Service Inc. stocks and delivers strong, durable ASTM A588 steel in a variety of shapes and forms. A high-quality, long-lasting product available in angles, channel, and beams, steel plate and bars, Central Steel’s ASTM A588 steel helps construct the world’s most vital structures while withstanding the earth’s most extreme conditions.
ASTM A588 is a high strength low-alloy structural steel specification with higher strength and improved atmospheric corrosion resistance for structural steel shapes such as angles, channel and beams, as well as steel plate and bars. ASTM A588 is primarily used for:
- Pedestrian Bridges
- Highway Bridge Girders and other bridge components
- Railcars and Containers
The A588 specification is intended primarily for use in unpainted applications, where savings in weight or added durability is important along with the longer life cycle due to its corrosion resistant properties and/or to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
The atmospheric corrosion resistance of A588 is substantially better than that of carbon steels such as A36 and A572-50 with or without copper addition. When properly designed and exposed to the atmosphere, A588 is suitable for many applications in the unpainted condition.
ASTM A588 has a 50ksi minimum yield strength and a 70ksi minimum tensile strength.
Please note, weathering steels are not suitable for use in significant load-bearing members above 450 degrees Celsius.
