From impressive pieces of public art to beautiful bridge design, the beauty and function of corten was used in various ways this year. As 2021 comes to an end, we rounded up a few of our favorite ways our customers used weathering steel this year.
1. “Speirein” by DeWitt Godfrey
Public artist DeWitt Godfrey completed a large-scale public sculpture titled “Speirein” for the Time, Space, Existence satellite exhibition at the 2021 Venice Biennale. Installed in the Giardini Martinaressa in Venice, Italy, the spherical corten structure is composed of packed conical elements, 430 centimeters by 430 centimeters high.
2. Canopies at Quartz Mountain State Park
Quartz Mountain State Park in Oklahoma reopened after undergoing extensive renovations, including new canopies made from weathering steel. Our client Oklahoma Construction Services used pipe and perforated sheets to construct the canopies.
3. The ConNector
Trees Atlanta used corten steel in their second large-scale public artwork for the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum. The 3-ton corten steel sculpture was designed by local artists Chris Bartlett and Kaylin Broussard, who also oversaw the fabrication and installation of the piece.
4. Weathering Steel Dugout Roof
Biddle & Brown Fence used weathering steel panels for the roofing of a baseball dugout located in Papago Park in Phoenix, Arizona.
5. Frames in Boulder, CO
The City of Boulder, Colorado commissioned Living Designs Studios to fabricate this sculpture featuring weathering steel frames that transpose the exact angle of repose and the geographic angle of Boulder’s nearby flatiron formations.
6. Landscaping Features
From corten steel edging to planter boxes, Atlanta Fine Gardens used corten steel for various landscape features throughout the year.
7. Colorado Building Workshop Pedestrian Bridge
A cohort of students of the University of Colorado’s College of Architecture and Planning used weathering steel in their design of a pedestrian bridge for the Town of Severance on the eastern plains of Colorado.
The corrosion-resistant and aesthetic benefits of weathering steel appeal to so many.
