CorTen Steel Alternative
Cor-Ten® is a United States Steel Corporation (USS) trade name for an atmospheric corrosion resistant steel it developed to be used where higher strength and longer life cycle material were desired.
These steels naturally form a layer of rust or patina when exposed to various atmospheric conditions. This patina is what guards this material against future corrosion.
As CorTen became more popular over the years other producing mills began to develop their own atmospheric corrosion resistant steel. Therefore, ASTM stepped in and created a CorTen steel alternative, that is considered equivalent specifications to CorTen in most applications.
The ASTM applicable equivalent specifications are:
Central Steel Service is a stocking distributor of these ASTM specifications in various products including, sheet, coil, plate, flat bars, round bars, angles, channels, pipe & tube.
CorTen is more resistant than other steels to atmospheric conditions like rain, snow, ice and fog because its chemical composition prevents deeper penetration by atmospheric corrosive agents. Therefore, weathering steel is used both for aesthetic purposes as well as to negate the cost of maintenance.
Some applications include:
- Building Facades
- Shipping Containers
- Ship Building
- Decorative Outdoor Containers
- Architectural Elements
- Railway Cars
- Transmission Towers
