19 Oct Project Spotlight: Pepper Place in Birmingham, AL
While many know Birmingham, Alabama as the “Magic City” for its rapid growth from 1881 through 1920, the city is also known as “Steel City” because much of its wealth and identity was built in the steel and iron industry.
It’s only fitting that steel, particularly weathering steel, is becoming an attractive architectural element for many projects in Birmingham. Local architects and landscape designers appreciate the practical benefits of weathering steel as well as the unpolished appearance of the steel’s patina.
Weathering steel spotted in Pepper Place
Central Steel Service supplied BILT in Alabama, Roots and Rain Landscape, and Webster’s Welding and Fabrication with cor-ten equivalent weathering steel for several projects in Pepper Place, a development that has become the focal point of Birmingham, Alabama’s Lakeview District. Next time you visit Pepper Place, take note of the weathering steel signage, roofing, awnings, landscape edging, and fencing!
Custom weathering steel signage
We plasma burned ¼” ASTM A588 plates to form the Pepper Place lettering that sits on top of Jeni’s Ice Creams and welcomes visitors into the area.
Weathering steel roofing
BILT constructed the roofing on Jeni’s Ice Creams using ASTM A606-4 22GA corrugated panels. Cor-ten equivalent weathering steel roofing is one of the latest trends in roofing products and architecture. Its unique look and naturally oxidizing finish provides a beautiful color and texture.
Weathering steel awnings
Weathering steel was also used to construct the awnings in front of Jeni’s Ice Creams and Bettola. BILT used ASTM A588 w-beams and angles to construct the awning structure at Jeni’s, and Webster’s Welding used A588 angles, flats, channels and 14GA for the awning structure at Bettola. Weathering steel awnings and pergolas are a great way to add curb appeal and provide shade over outdoor dining areas.
Weathering steel landscape edging
Cor-ten steel landscape edging is simple to use and an effective way to define space around plants and natural areas or along driveways and sidewalks. Roots and Rain Landscape and BILT used ASTM A588 flat bar and plasma burned A588 plate for landscape edging around Pepper Place.
Weathering steel fencing
Weathering steel shapes and hollow structural sections are often used to fabricate fencing and gates. Webster’s Welding and Fabrication used ASTM A847 tubing and A588 flat bar to create stair and patio railings around the outdoor dining area at Blueprint on 3rd.
