As the pandemic persists and social distancing remains the new normal, restaurants, particularly in New York, are moving their dining rooms outside in order to safely serve their customers. In fact, Architizer recently published an article on How New York’s Streets Have Been Transformed for Outdoor Dining.
“Restaurants that had been hanging on with only take out and delivery for the past three months moved quickly to create outdoor seating environments for their customers. And while the solutions are makeshift — and mostly temporary — each one reflects a degree of ingenuity worthy of New York,” Architizer reported.
Architizer noted that some restaurants are getting creative to establish an appealing curbside ambiance. For instance, some restaurants are using planter boxes, string lights, and awnings to provide a festive atmosphere for their guests to enjoy a meal outside of their homes.
Weathering Steel Solutions for Outdoor Dining Spaces
Weathering steel specialty products, such as bollards, planter boxes and pergolas, are ideal for providing a curbside barrier and adding to the ambiance of outdoor spaces.
Weathering Steel Bollards
A bollard is a short, sturdy post that creates a physical and visual barrier. Installing weathering steel bollards around your outdoor dining space not only separates your outdoor dining space from the rest of the sidewalk, street or patio, but it also protects the area from vehicle traffic. Weathering steel bollards are made from ASTM A847 square and round tubing.
Weathering Steel Planter Boxes
If you’re looking for a more decorative barrier, weathering steel planter boxes can serve the same purpose as bollards. Planter boxes could be placed around the outside of the space or in between dining tables to offer separation and privacy. Planter boxes can be cut-to-size and are made from ASTM A588 and A606-4 steel plates.
Weathering Steel Pergolas & Roofing
Architects commonly use weathering steel corrugated and profile panels for roofing over outdoor spaces. For instance, Bettola, an Italian restaurant in Birmingham, installed a weathering steel pergola over their outdoor dining patio for shade and added curb appeal. Weathering steel corrugated and profile panels are produced from ASTM A606-4 or A588 from 22GA to 10GA thicknesses.
